Where to Go Based on Your Enneagram

Love zodiac-based travel recommendations? Me too, but I thought it would be even more fun to put a different spin on your next big travel inspo. While I’m far from an expert in personality typing (and we all know that of course there’s more to who we are and how we travel than what an online quiz says), here’s where to go based on your Enneagram!

What Are Enneagrams?

First things first, what’s an Enneagram? This is a system of personality typing that describes patterns in how people interpret the world and manage their emotions. There are nine types, each with their own characteristics. If you don’t know your type, you can find out by taking a quick online test.

Notre Dame, Paris is just one of many stops for a perfectionist itinerary as an Enneagram Type 1

Where to Go for Enneagram Type 1: The Reformer

Traits: Rational, idealistic, principled, purposeful, self-controlled, perfectionist

Type A girlies, this one’s for you. I think Paris is perfect for two reasons. On the one hand, you can indulge your idealistic FOMO and pack your itinerary to the brim with museums, neighborhood walks, and the best views of the Eiffel Tower. On the other hand, you can work on letting go of that perfectionism with a long, leisurely afternoon sipping coffee in a chic Parisian café. Balance, baby!

Where to Go for Enneagram Type 2: The Helper

Traits: Caring, interpersonal, demonstrative, generous, people-pleasing, possessive

If you travel for people and connections more than anything else, Thailand is your dream destination. It’s called the Land of Smiles for a reason! Make friends in a Bangkok hostel dorm or join a Monk Chat at a monastery in Chiang Mai.

Trekking to Annapurna Base Camp is a great achievement for Enneagram Type 3

Where to Go for Enneagram Type 3: The Achiever

Traits: Success-oriented, pragmatic, adaptive, excelling, driven, image-conscious

Nothing says accomplishment like a big bucket list trek. Try the Inca Trail to Mahcu Picchu in Peru or the Annapurna Sanctuary in Nepal. It’s adventurous and comes with some great Instagram fodder.

Where to Go for Enneagram Type 4: The Individualist

Traits: Sensitive, withdrawn, expressive, dramatic, self-absorbed, temperamental

To me this profile suggests a solo trip with some dramatic flair. Think big, sweeping landscapes and introspective moments. A long solo hike in the Grand Canyon or the Scottish Highlands would fit the bill.

The Library of Congress makes Washington DC a beacon of knowledge for Enneagram Type 5

Where to Go for Enneagram Type 5: The Investigator

Traits: Intense, cerebral, perceptive, innovative, secretive, isolated

This love of learning and exploring demands a city packed with museums and historical sites where you can feed your insatiable curiosity. Berlin or Washington DC would both make great playgrounds.

Where to Go for Enneagram Type 6: The Loyalist

Traits: Committed, security-oriented, engaging, responsible, anxious, suspicious

I have a hunch that Loyalists might feel really intimidated by the idea of solo travel. Choosing a destination without a language barrier or huge culture shock like London can help! London is an amazing destination for your first solo trip.

Backpacking in Southeast Asia is a perfect spontaneous adventure for Enneagram Type 7

Where to Go for Enneagram Type 7: The Enthusiast

Traits: Busy, fun-loving, spontaneous, versatile, distractible, scattered

These characteristics point to someone who would love a high-energy adventure without too much planned in advance. Backpacking along the Banana Pancake Trail in Southeast Asia would be perfect.

Where to Go for Enneagram Type 8: The Challenger

Traits: Powerful, dominating, self-confident, decisive, willful, confrontational

Rome has got that bold bitch energy! There’s something particularly empowering about navigating the chaotic streets and staring down drivers from the crosswalk. It’s like the city dares you to take it on—and you will!

Costa Rica relaxing travel destination for Enneagram Type 9

Where to Go for Enneagram Type 9: The Peacemaker

Traits: Easygoing, self-effacing, receptive, reassuring, agreeable, complacent

This laid-back vibe absolutely sings Costa Rica pura vida. Picture yourself relaxing on the beach or up in the cloud forests without a care in the world.
