WorldSmith of the Month: Writer Alina Popescu

How many of us had our wanderlust first inspired by a beloved book? The Three Musketeers swashbuckles us to 17th century France. Shogun turns back the clock to feudal Japan. Authors from Ernest Hemingway to Elizabeth Gilbert are as famous for their personal travels as they are for their writing. In fantasy writer Alina Popescu’s first novel, she had the unique pleasure of reliving some of her favorite trips through the eyes of her heroine. From her earliest memories, she says, “Travel was something I looked forward to, and the urge to see more, discover more, became a part of who I am.”

“As soon as you see someone in your hostel with a guitar, you instantly know you can easily build a conversation with them,” says travel blogger Lena Tarasyuk. But what if instead of a guitar in a hostel, it was a ukulele on a street corner with a camera set up to record?

Few arts go hand in hand with travel like photography. We all love to snap away while we’re overseas, whether it’s on a disposable Kodak, a waterproof GoPro, or a fancy DSLR with interchangeable lenses. Taking photos while we travel at its most basic helps us show friends and family back home what our time abroad was like, but at its best, developing your photographic craft makes you a better traveler. The reason is simple. A traveler and a photographer both require the same trait for success: patience.

Just ask professional photographer Erica Coffman, who has fondly irritated many a travel companion with her long shoot set-ups!
